Senior Mechanical Engineering Manager and Configuration Manager - Farmington, CT

The Senior Mechanical Engineering and Configuration Manager provides strategic and operational leadership for mechanical engineering and configuration management supporting access control and automatic door systems. The role sets technical and portfolio priorities, develops engineering and configuration capability, and is accountable for delivering safe, reliable, manufacturable, and cost-effective products throughout their lifecycle. The Senior Manager leads New Product Development (NPD), Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE), quality and reliability improvements, configuration-data integrity, and engineering-tool strategy while building an engaged, inclusive, high-performing organization.

Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. The company does not intend to provide sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B, TN, etc.) for this employment position.

What You Will Do:

  • Leadership & Resource Alignment: Set direction and priorities for the mechanical engineering and configuration teams; coach staff engineers, managers and senior technical talent, build succession and capability plans, and foster an inclusive, high-performing culture (including Gallup, DE&I, and 5S). Lead data-driven workforce and capacity planning, resolve competing resource demands, and align people and budgets with enterprise and product-portfolio priorities.
  • NPD, VAVE & Accelerated Velocity: Provide senior-level oversight of New Product Development, legacy product updates (e.g., Dura-Storm), and VAVE programs. Establish portfolio priorities, review readiness and key risks at Phase & Gate milestones and design reviews (MEDR/IDR), and drive measurable improvements in quality, cost, delivery, and time-to-market. Sponsor disciplined execution and remove organizational barriers.
  • Configuration Management, Engineering Change and Other Enterprise Processes: Establish governance and accountability for engineering change (ECN/MCN/CIB), configuration management and other enterprise processes in collaboration with operations, quality, finance and other disciplines. Lead resolution of systemic legacy product-data issues; set standards and audit 3D models, drawings, and Part-Centric structures to maintain accurate, controlled alignment across Windchill, ERP, and cutsheets. Drive corrective actions and sustainable process improvements.
  • Radical End-to-End Accountability: Own escalation and resolution of significant product, field, manufacturing, and installation issues across the product lifecycle. Sponsor and lead cross-functional Tiger Teams for high-impact Problem Reports (PRs), customer escalations, and complex projects (including large-scale Transit projects); ensure root causes, containment, corrective actions, and lessons learned are addressed and communicated.
  • Tools, Data & Innovation: Define priorities and governance for enterprise engineering tools (Allegion Atlas/Windchill, ERP) and lead adoption of Part-Centric practices. Develop the roadmap for engineering data and workflow improvements; evaluate and scale appropriate innovation, including FEA, 3D printing, and AI (AlleGPT), while ensuring solutions deliver measurable business value and responsible use.
  • Supply Chain & Cost Optimization: Partner with Global Supply Management (GSM), operations, quality, and commercial teams to set and deliver supplier, productivity, and cost-reduction priorities. Lead strategic supplier onboarding and evaluation of PPAP documentation; ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, installation, service, and lifecycle cost, including aluminum extrusions, castings, and finishing processes.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; Master’s degree preferred. 15+ years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years of direct management. Demonstrated success setting direction, developing talent, and delivering measurable engineering and business outcomes.
  • Technical & Configuration Proficiency: High proficiency in 3D CAD software (Creo preferred) and PLM/ERP systems (Windchill/Microsoft Dynamics D365), with a strong understanding of engineering change processes (ECN/MCN), ERP configurators, and BOM management.
  • Product & Manufacturing Knowledge: Extensive experience leading New Product Development (NPD) and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE), with practical knowledge of manufacturing processes (aluminum extrusions, castings, finishing). Experience with electro-mechanical systems is a plus; demonstrated ability to connect technical decisions to quality, cost, manufacturability, and customer outcomes.
  • Problem Solving & Cross-Functional Leadership: Excellent structured problem-solving skills (5-Why, 8D, Root-Cause Analysis), with a record of leading cross-functional teams through complex, high-impact issues. Takes end-to-end ownership, influences across departmental boundaries, and ensures corrective actions are sustained.
  • Strategic Execution & Resource Management: Demonstrated ability to set engineering priorities, perform workforce and capacity planning, develop and evaluate business cases, and align engineering and configuration resources to maximize performance, efficiency, and ROI. Expected 25% travel between Farmington CT and Mt Comfort IN locations.
  • Communication & Culture: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders, communicate risk and trade-offs, foster an inclusive workplace, develop team engagement, and create appropriate urgency across the organization.
