About Settify At Settify, we help lawyers help people. We’re an Australian legal technology company working with law firms around the world. Settify, an AI-backed technology, helps clients share their story through guided online questions, in their own time. Whether someone is navigating a family matter or planning a will, taking the first step can feel daunting. Settify Lawyers arrive at the first meeting with the briefs they need, ready to focus on the person in front of them. Using Settify saves time, increases the accuracy of their work and ultimately, helps their clients by reducing their costs and increases their chance of success in their matters. We are a member of the ATI legal technology group, and work closely with the LEAP group of companies which are the leading provider of Legal Practice Management Solutions in the world, with clients across Australia, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Poland and New Zealand.
What you'll do We are building the next generation of Settify — new application code in TypeScript, a new AI infrastructure stack, and new deployment pipelines. This role sits deliberately at the intersection of software engineering and platform engineering, with a strong focus on the AI infrastructure powering our product. You will write backend code one day, tune a AWS cost dashboard the next, and own both halves of a feature’s lifecycle. If you are the kind of engineer who shipped a feature and then wished you’d been the one to deploy and observe it, this is the shape of role you’ve been looking for. The engineering team is small — 5 in Sydney and 3 international — so your work compounds visibly and your voice matters in direction-setting conversations. You enjoy solving problems with others, sharing what you know and learning along the way. You communicate clearly and follow things through, with a practical approach that makes life easier for your teammates and the people using our product.
To make this happen you will: Build — approximately 50% of your time
- Design and ship backend services in TypeScript / Node.js — APIs, data model, business logic, LLM integrations
- Design schemas that survive contact with real users and changing requirements
- Own meaningful slices of the product end-to-end — make the calls, ship the work, live with the results
Run — approximately 50% of your time
- Own our AWS infrastructure — Lambda, ECS, RDS, DynamoDB, SQS, VPC, IAM — managed as code with CDK
- Improve CI/CD pipelines so developers can build, test, deploy and roll back with confidence
- Own the AI infrastructure that powers Settify’s LLM features — OpenAI (or equivalent) model access, Langfuse tracing, token/cost/latency monitoring, eval pipelines, rate limits, retries and timeouts
- Build observability into the delivery pipeline itself: alert design, SLI/SLO definition, incident response
- Help take Settify to new regions with repeatable regional deployments
- Keep customer data secure — IAM, secrets, encryption, backups — as part of everyday operations and work toward SOC 2
What you'll bring
- 8+ years building and shipping production software, ideally including time where you also owned the platform it ran on
- Deep proficiency in Node.js on the backend, and good working experience in TypeScript
- Strong AWS depth: Lambda, ECS/EKS, RDS, DynamoDB, SQS, VPC, IAM — real ownership rather than just familiarity
- Infrastructure-as-code discipline: CDK or Terraform at depth
- CI/CD pipeline design: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or similar; automated testing, deployments, rollbacks
- Observability fluency: Datadog, Grafana/Prometheus or CloudWatch; alert design
- StrongData modelling instincts — schemas that survived real users and changing requirements
- Database operations — Postgres, DynamoDB or similar; schema design, indexing, migrations
- Hands-onLLM infrastructure experience — API integration, rate limits, retries, timeouts, cost/latency monitoring
- A CS or engineering degree, or the equivalent depth from building things — we care about how you think, not where you learned it
- Light React familiarity — enough to debug or contribute to admin UI, not expert-level
Even better if you have;
- Experience setting up and running multi-region cloud deployments
- LegalTech, FinTech, HealthTech, or other regulated-industry background
- Shipping zero-to-one at an early-stage team — knows the difference between “scrappy” and “sloppy”
- Experience with LLM observability tooling (Langfuse, Phoenix, Helicone) in production
- Security-aware development: auth patterns, OWASP basics, secrets management, PII handling
